Forward Tilt on Office Chairs: Who Actually Needs It

Bottom line

Forward tilt tips the seat slightly downward for upright, desk-focused work. It helps some people who sit forward at the keyboard, but it is not required for everyone. On some Haworth chairs (Fern, Zody, Very), warranty capacity is 350 lb without forward tilt and 325 lb with it—confirm before you buy.

When forward tilt helps

If you sit perched toward the desk for keyboard-heavy work, a few degrees of seat angle can reduce the feeling of fighting a reclined task chair.

When capacity depends on options

Some manufacturers change warranty capacity when forward tilt is included. We call those differences out on each chair’s spec sheet so you can match the listing to the rating.
